Unique Seafood PJ23 is quite the establishment here in PJ. The seafood wholesale and distribution business has been lucrative for the Wongs, a family friend. Unique Seafood is but one of their chain of restaurants serving the freshest fruit de mers/ fruitti di mare.
The ‘live’ seafood setup (choose and cook) has been a roaring success for decades. The concept, similar to Aberdeen or Sai Kung in HK, is pretty simple: pick ‘live’ seafood from the aquarium and have it cooked your way: the classic (seafood =fish (type), crabs (type), prawns (type), clams (type) etc) done in cooking (style= HK soya sauce steamed, deep fried, Teochew etc ). The delectable possibilities seemed endless.
It’s largely a ‘freshness’ or sea to table play that made Unique famous. But having tried most of their menu for over a decade, I’d like to highlight just two simple dishes that defines Unique (to me).
1. Steamed prawns or ‘pak cheok’ style
2. Braised lobster (ginger scallion) noodles, yee mee, preferably
3. Fried rice and vegetables (any type, style)
Over the years, I’ve come to know that the Unique Seafood PJ23 chefs will deliver consistently, especially those dishes above. This is where my palate gets a little testy eg. pak cheok prawns vs Soon Hock in soya sauce (both steamed, but with the former making the cut). Fret not, everything is ‘above average’ due to the freshness of the ingredients but that ‘last mile’ is what CEs are after.
