Victorious Cafe, located next to Kingwood Hotel in the center of Sibu, hides a Teochew Kueh Chap stall that is loved by locals. It is a second-generation old brand. The proprietress took over the stall from her mother more than ten years ago and carefully guarded this bowl of traditional flavor full of nostalgia, which has been eaten by many Sibu people for decades.
A bowl of RM12 for extra Kueh Chap, plus RM1 for freshly fried dough sticks, is really rich, delicious and affordable. The soup base is slowly boiled with pork bones, medicinal herbs and spices, presenting a rich but not greasy taste; the Kueh noodles are thin and soft, soaking up the soup, and every bite is full of essence. The ingredients are also not sloppy - there are braised large intestines, braised small intestines, braised pork belly, pork belly, lean meat and tofu, each of which is braised to taste, clean and without fishy smell, tender and chewy, and it is especially enjoyable to eat with hot soup.
The freshly fried dough sticks are the perfect match, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. After being soaked in hot kueh juice, they still retain their crispness, adding layers of taste. Although the teahouse environment is simple, it is warm and humane. The proprietress is friendly and talkative, and often chats with diners about the story of kueh juice and the bits and pieces of the past. What people eat is not only delicious, but also the taste of memory.
If you come to Sibu and want to find a bowl of authentic traditional Teochew kueh chap, Victorious Cafe next to Kingwood Hotel is definitely worth a try.
