Cheng Heng Kway Chap and Braised Duck Rice is Good

Chicken Rice
I recently decided to put Xi Yue Happiness Asia Chicken USJ to the test after reading rave reviews claiming the original store in Kepong had the best chicken rice in the Klang Valley. Opting for the delivery service from their USJ outlet, I was eager to see if it lived up to the massive hype.

Unfortunately, the experience suggests that either the brand is overhyped or the USJ branch hasn’t quite managed to retain the quality of the original “OG” outlet. While the chicken was undeniably smooth in texture, it was surprisingly lacking in depth. There was very little flavor going for it.

Thankfully, I still had some leftover condiments from a previous order of Nanyang Sand Ginger Chicken, and it was those condiments that ultimately saved the meal.
The rice was equally underwhelming and lacked the signature fragrance one expects from a premium chicken rice. We had to rely on the provided fried garlic condiment just to give it any semblance of “oomph.”

The lady finger with sesame sauce was OK.

Ironically, the highlight of the order turned out to be the braised egg or what they call their Golden Egg, which Jen noted was quite good. Given the premium price point for this meal, the lack of quality control was disappointing. Having paid this much for a heritage staple, I would expect a far more flavorful and consistent performance.

Half Smooth Chicken with Chicken Fragrant Rice and a Golden Egg: RM67.35
Lady Finger with Sesame Sauce: RM10.90
Total (after RM12 discount): RM71.75 for the 2 of us
Average per pax: RM35.87
Score: 6.2/10
M – Meal Value
At RM71.75 for a half-chicken set, the price is on the higher end for chicken rice. Given that the core components—the chicken and the rice—failed to deliver on flavour, the value proposition feels weak despite the “Hot Deals” discount.
Score: 5.5/10
V – Vroomness of Delivery
The delivery was on time. The packaging was secure, and the items arrived in good condition, but logistical efficiency can’t compensate for a lack of culinary impact.
Score: 8.0/10
X – X-Factor
The X-factor was missing here. Usually, a high-end chicken rice relies on the “Happiness” factor of its secret sauce or rice aromatics, but this meal was ultimately salvaged by condiments from a completely different restaurant.
Score: 5.0/10
