Dim Sum, Non-Halal
My sister has been living in Queens for a long time. The other day we sampled Maeilla near the East River for some Italian grub. Today we decided to go back to our Asian roots and try dim sum at Dim Sum Garden in Flushing.
Flushing is one of the oldest, largest Asian enclaves in New York. My sister told me it was possible to not speak a single word of English , and today i verify that true. Flushing is Little China. It’s full on Chinatown vibes, as C-town as any of the ones you can find in London, Sydney,
We decided to go to Dim Sum garden - an establishment my sister has been frequenting for 2 decades. The fact that the owners were from HK was a plus. I feel dim sum is quintessentially HK, so had my hopes a little higher walking into the restaurant.
I did the ordering as my sister and brother in-law are so regular, they wanted to be ‘surprised”
Stir Fried Beef Hor Fun was a find childhood memory, so i went for that. The beef hor fun was above average. The beef slices could have been a little more less well done, but the wok hei overall was apparent.
There was lobster congee on special request, so i had to have that as well. The lobster congee was also above average, here they used the spiny lobster - not the usual Boston lobster with claws used in Manhattan. That worked for me, the sweetness of the crustacean was infused in the gooey viscous congee. There wasn’t much seasoning, so the freshness of the lobster really carried the dish.
The beef balls were the winner for me - the springiness was delightful. The texture was what I’d imagine a beef tendon dish to be, but this was just meat. Kudos. The patty was smeared with copious amounts of coriander which I loved. Each ball was the size of a baseball, and dipped with chilli oil (lat chiu yau), it was delectable!
The rest were dim sum regulars such as har gow, siew mai, fried bean curd skin. My sister also ordered phoenix claws and prawn cheong fun. Both were average ie comparable to what we can get in Asia.
Har Gow
Siew Mai
Phoenix Claws
Total bill was USD95 including tips for 3 pax.
It was the perfect outing at Flushing for me, with good , dependable dim sum - it was a piece of ‘home away from home’ that has sustained my sister and her husband for 2 decades, and I could feel that.
