Nasi Kandar, Pork-Free
While passing by Bukit Jalil, I noticed that Nasi Kandar Bendi (listed as Nasi Kandar Gani Maju on Google) did not have a long queue.

Seizing the opportunity, I decided to pop in and “tapau” some food to take home. The proprietor’s serving style added a unique flair to the experience. It starts with him asking whether you want your curry “pedas dan manis” (spicy and sweet), “pedas” (spicy), or “manis” (sweet). Then you choose your meat or vegetables to go with the nasi kandar, and he finishes with a loud exclamation, “Mantap, itu dia!” which translates to “Awesome, there you go!”

They even have their own paper wrapper.

Despite the showmanship, I found the curry less aromatic and spicy than I would have liked. The flavours were somewhat muted, missing the robust kick I usually expect from a good nasi kandar curry. My fried chicken, unfortunately, also lacked seasoning, leaving it rather bland other than the skin.

However, not everything was a disappointment. I enjoyed the telur murtabak, which was nicely seasoned and had a good balance of flavours. The steamed bendi (lady’s finger) was another highlight, cooked just right with a tender yet firm texture. At RM23, it’s par for the course where prices for nasi kandar are at these days, but considering the overall experience, I felt there are better options available at the same price point.

While it may not have lived up to the hype for me personally, it’s still worth a visit for those curious to experience the proprietor’s entertaining serving style.
