You can’t talk about oyster Happy Hours without mentioning The Mermaid Inn Chelsea. The reliable seafood spot has several locations in the city, and this one is conveniently located right by the High Line and several Hudson Yards high-rises. Whether you’ve spent the day on shopping or on spreadsheets, Mermaid Inn has the USD10 cocktails and USD1.50 oysters you need to transition into the evening.
On a sunny day, the dining room up front opens out onto the street, becoming increasingly louder as people fill up on hot sauce martinis before Happy Hour ends at 6:30 pm. After that, it’s sort of a carriage-into-pumpkin situation. Though the food is fairly decent — especially their famous, buttery lobster roll — this location isn’t as romantic as the one in Greenwich Village, despite using the same upscale clam shack decor for their Cape Cod cosplay.
They’ve several locations in the city - but Chiefeater Susan lives closest to the Chelsea outlet. No regrets move. The happy hour 4.30 to 6 pm is a no regrets move. Oysters kept flowing - these were creamy and umami.
The fish tacos was something else - finger bites at 7.5/10.
The prawn sliders were a win too at 7.5/10. The idyllic seaside quant setting (pure monochrome) of The Mermaid Inn Chelsea is comforting, even during the turn of winter in the Big Apple.
We paired each dish with rosé. And to cap it off, we had their in house special chaitini. This was, as far as drinks and cocktails go, a 8/10
They had a fun fortune mermaid papier-machie fortune paper. Good way to end the night - if not just for laughs. Depending how the thin sliver of paper uncurled on your palms - you had your reading.
Total damage USD211 for 4 pax. Overall a very enticing 7/10 for The Mermaid Inn Chelsea. When you’re in town give the Mermaid Inn a go. You wont regret this Atlantean respite.
