Hunan, Non-Halal
Lao Hu Nan Puchong is the latest culinary gem to grace IOI Mall Puchong, and we had the pleasure of dining there just three days after its opening on 25th January 2025. While its name hints at Hunanese cuisine, the head chef, Chef Kidd Tang, revealed that the menu is now a mix of Hunan and Szechuan influences. What followed was a meal that left us delighted.
We began with a stir-fried spicy sour julienned potato dish (RM22.90), which served as a brilliant appetiser. The harmonious balance of spiciness and sourness not only tantalised the palate but also prepared us for the meal ahead. Its crisp texture and bold flavours were both refreshing and addictive.
Next came the steamed pork patty with an egg on top (RM28.90), a dish that was uniquely presented compared to what we usually observe. Unlike the traditional Cantonese steamed pork patty, this version incorporated mushrooms and shrimp into the mixture, and had a thinner yet firmer texture with a deeper umami flavour. The egg added a layer of richness to the dish, making it both comforting and satisfying. The soy sauce used on it is so good that you will likely find yourself consuming every last bit of it off the dish.
The final dish of the day was the smoked vegetable fried rice (RM22.90). The chinese name of this dish is 外婆菜炒饭. Their menu translated it as “mixed vegetable fried rice” which would not have made us interested to order it. Fortunately Chef Kidd told us that this dish was made with a smoked vegetable which intrigued us. We are so glad we ordered it. The smoky aroma that wafted up as it was served justified his description. The smokiness infused into each grain elevated the humble dish into something memorable.
To complement our dishes, we opted for a pot of Cha Wang tea (RM18.90). Its tranquil yet aromatic profile paired beautifully with the bold flavours of the food, rounding out the meal perfectly.
Surprisingly, despite its location near the bustling entrance of the food street in IOI Mall, Lao Hu Nan Puchong offers a calm and inviting environment. They have certainly made an impressive debut in Puchong and it’s a place I’ll undoubtedly revisit.
Our total bill came up to RM102.95 for 3 dishes and a pot of tea.
