Hidden in plain sight above street level, Bar Abong remains one of Kota Kinabalu's best-kept secrets, despite having been open for five months (since Nov 2024). Perhaps its elevated location and very discreet signboard has kept it out of the immediate gaze of passersby, but for those who take the time to seek it out, an intimate and rewarding dining experience awaits. This is not your typical bar serving up standard fare; instead, Bar Abong takes a refined approach to their food. Each dish is meticulously prepared, elegantly plated, and designed to be savoured with an appreciation for balance and detail.
The lunch began with a plate of clams (RM42), a dish that immediately set the tone for what was to come. The shellfish were bathed in a rich, creamy sauce that carried just the right amount of tangy brightness to keep it from feeling too heavy. Each spoonful of the velvety broth was a pleasure on its own, but the addition of crusty sourdough on the side made the experience even better.
Close up
There’s something deeply satisfying about dipping well-toasted bread.
Next came the chili eggplant (RM18), a dish that stood out not only for its bold, assertive flavours but also for its sheer generosity. This wasn’t a timid little appetiser. It was a substantial serving, designed to be shared and enjoyed slowly, ideally with a cold beer in hand. The fried eggplant was the perfect companion to a tall cold one.
To round off the meal, we had the Croquettes Abong (RM25) looking every bit as enticing as they tasted. Made with tenggiri (Spanish mackerel), these golden, crisp parcels held a beautifully seasoned filling that was both delicate and deeply flavourful. There was a certain elegance in their simplicity—no unnecessary frills, just expertly executed croquettes that were a joy to eat.
Lightly crisp on the outside, soft and yielding within.
Of course, no visit to Bar Abong would be complete without a drink or two. The Sapporo draught (RM18 per glass) was an easygoing, refreshing choice. Light enough to pair well with the fried dishes while still carrying enough character to stand on its own.
For those with the time, the bar also boasts a selection of natural wines. Something I can consider for my next visit here. Despite its relatively low profile, Bar Abong is a place that deserves to be sought out.
