Han’s Cafe Pork Chop
Chiefeater Eddie Low caught with a friend at Han's Cafe and enjoyed a simple dinner of Hainanese Pork Rice

Shanghainese, Non-Halal
Back again at Yan’s Dining. The Shanghai buns were superbly explode in your mouth level - 7/10
I’ve never had a thing for these buns (preferring the steamed xiaolongbaos) but Yan’s are as good as they come. Tastes exactly similar to the street buns in Shanghai.

The sweet prawns, succulent and juicy were each coated with a thin film of scrambled eggs. Perfection. This was 7/10

The vegetable claypot fried rice was the star of the night. Tastes luxuriously light and delicate yet packing full spectrum of flavours from each ingredient. This was a 7.5/10 and probably.

The tungpoyoke was also good at 7/10. I’ve been told by aficionados of this dish it’s 7.5/10 but for me it was too sweet. Sinfully so. But still, every piece had layers of meat and fats that melted in your mouth. Almost like pork slurry, but in a good way. Masterful.

The other star of tonight’s dinner must be the potato noodles - I’ve always been fascinated by this north Asian noodle variety. It’s not tunghoon. It’s a flat, broad and translucent pan meen doppelgänger that tastes so much better. This potato noodle dish was stir fried with duck meat and edamame and mushrooms. Not a South East Asian combo for sure. This came out 7.5/10 for me. And for a few others as well- all seasoned palates.

The steamed squid was also good, coming in at 7/10. The sauce was a mala tainted albeit sweet-ish soya sauce. Every slice was tender and juicy.

the tofu and crab meat soup was excellent too - at 7/10

Yan’s is turning out to be one of those restaurants we repeat and come back incessantly until we exhaust their menu. While the other groups like Imperial and Crystal and Paradise focus more on Teochew, Cantonese and hotpot fare - Yan’s is carving a niche for itself amongst the local Chinese patrons in Sg.
