A return visit to Sasa Seafood Restaurant turned out to be even more enjoyable than the last. This time, I discovered they actually have a private room tucked away on the side that can comfortably seat up to 30 people—ideal for gatherings or family dinners where you want a bit of space and quiet away from the main floor.
We started off with tofu.
This time around, the salted egg squid redeemed itself. Amply seasoned, tender inside, and not chewy like during my previous visit.
The sayur manis with egg remained a reliable favourite. vibrant and still carrying that familiar savoury-sweet note that made it easy to polish off.
Stir fried vegetables.
Snails are something I still shudder to have.
The prawns were lovely.
I enjoyed the seabass, cooked just right and soaking in a lightly tangy soy-based sauce that paired beautifully with the delicate flesh of the fish.
But the dish that stood out most this time was the lala soup made with Sabah’s prized white clams. The clams were undeniably fresh—plump, juicy, with no trace of grit and the soup itself had a clean, briny sweetness with a ginger base that was both flavourful and appetite-whetting.
We wrapped up the evening with a fruit platter, and here was another unexpected highlight, the pineapple was so intensely sweet it was the first thing to disappear off the platter.
All in, it felt like Sasa had hit its stride that night, especially with the added comfort of a private room and the consistency of the food. A solid place for good seafood in Kota Kinabalu, with some standouts when they get it right.
