Craving ramen in Woodlands? Chiefeater Olivia Smith finds Takagi Ramen Woodlands delivers warmth, comfort & great value in every bowl

Ramen
Kuala Lumpur is a city that never stops, and neither do I! This week found me in the heart of the city, Suria KLCC, for a series of work meetings. When you’re bouncing from one discussion to the next, finding a quick, satisfying, and utterly delicious lunch can be a challenge. You want something that hits the spot without weighing you down, and ideally, something that offers a comforting break from the hustle. That’s precisely how I stumbled upon Not A Ramen KLCC.
I remembered seeing it tucked away on the Concourse Level of Suria KLCC, just a stone's throw from the bustling crowd. Intrigued by the name – "Not A Ramen" – I decided it was the perfect opportunity for a workday Ramen Review (even if it’s technically not ramen!). As someone who's always exploring ramen in Malaysia, the concept instantly caught my eye. This place is definitely one of the "others" in terms of traditional classifications, but it promised something ramen-adjacent, and my curiosity was piqued.
First Impressions: Designed for the Urban Pace
Walking into Not A Ramen, you immediately get a sense of its urban efficiency. The setup is modern, clean, and streamlined, clearly designed for quick service without sacrificing quality. There are comfortable counter seats and small tables, perfect for solo diners like myself, or for a quick bite with a colleague. The atmosphere is energetic but not chaotic, a welcome respite from the KLCC buzz. It’s an ideal spot when you need a speedy, comforting meal that feels more special than your average food court fare.

The Broth That Hits Different: A Chicken-Centric Delight
For an authentic take, let’s get into the main event: the broth. Not A Ramen specializes in rich, flavourful chicken-based broths, making it a fantastic option. This commitment to chicken as its base truly shines.
I opted for their signature Toripaitan Chicken Broth version. It arrived steaming hot, a testament to its freshness. The broth was incredibly creamy and milky, a result of hours of simmering. It had a deep, savoury umami that was both comforting and invigorating – exactly what I needed to re-energize for my afternoon meetings. It reminded me of a well-executed paitan, rich without being overly greasy. It's truly a chicken broth lover's dream, and stands out among others I've tried in the city for its distinct depth.
My colleague chose the Spicy Miso Chicken Broth, which had a vibrant aroma and a promising reddish hue. She raved about the perfectly balanced heat that enhanced, rather than masked, the chicken flavour. It’s definitely a good option if you like a kick without wanting to set your mouth on fire.
Noodles and Toppings: A Thoughtful Ensemble
The noodles at Not A Ramen are thick, wavy, and wonderfully chewy, holding onto the rich broth exceptionally well. They provide a satisfying bite and are clearly high-quality, contributing significantly to the overall enjoyment of the bowl.
As for toppings, they kept it simple yet effective. The chicken chashu was tender and nicely seasoned, slicing easily and adding a pleasant savoury element. A perfectly cooked ajitama (marinated soft-boiled egg) with its gooey yolk was, as always, a welcome addition. Fresh spring onions added a necessary touch of freshness and crunch.
While I thoroughly enjoyed my experience, here's my honest take:
The "Yes":
Convenience & Speed: If you're looking for a quick, delicious, and satisfying meal in KLCC, this is a definite yes. It's efficient without feeling rushed.
Flavorful Chicken Broth: The Toripaitan broth is genuinely excellent and stands strong on its own, easily competing with some of the best chicken-based ramen I’ve had.
Pork-Free: For those who prefer a non-pork option, this is a fantastic choice, focusing entirely on chicken excellence.
Consistent Quality: Every component, from noodles to toppings, feels thoughtfully prepared.
The "No":
"Not A Ramen" Title: The history of ramen is complex, with endless regional variations as detailed in the Wikipedia entry on ramen, so their modern take is interesting. However, the name might confuse purists expecting a very specific type of Japanese ramen. It's more of a ramen-inspired noodle dish.
Limited Customization: Compared to some traditional ramen shops, customization options are somewhat limited, but this contributes to its efficiency.
Atmosphere for Quick Bites: It’s great for a fast meal but perhaps not for a long, leisurely dining experience if that's what you're after.
Final Thoughts: A Smart Choice for the Urban Ramen Lover
All about ramen is about finding what fits the moment, and Not A Ramen perfectly fits the bill for a great meal in a bustling city centre. It provides a delicious, comforting, and quick meal without compromising on flavour.
If you’re working in KLCC, or just passing through and need a satisfying lunch, I highly recommend giving Not A Ramen KLCC a try. It’s a testament to the evolving ramen in Malaysia scene, offering a fresh take on a beloved comfort food.
