New Paris Restaurant Champagne Chicken

Tai Chow

Description

What Chiefeater VK Ordered at New Paris Restaurant

New Paris Restaurant in SS2 is one of those legendary tai chow (Chinese stir-fry) spots that used to be packed to the rafters. It occupies three shop lots and has been a neighbourhood institution for decades. We were there for a group dinner and had a few of their classics, including the braised pork knuckle and some stir-fried greens.

The dinner overall was competent. The dishes were technically correct, but largely unremarkable. The braised pork knuckle was savoury, but the accompanying claypot taufu and greens were just okay.

Pork Knuckle

The only dish that truly stood out was the signature Champagne Chicken. The presentation is the immediate hook, served in a carved-out watermelon bowl. The chicken pieces themselves are sticky, sweet, and savoury, and the accompanying watermelon balls are a necessary palate cleanser that cuts through the richness.

However, the major issue is the value proposition. If New Paris Restaurant used to be the value leader in PJ, it certainly no longer is. The price we paid for the dishes felt too expensive for the quality rendered.

Pricing with taxes

Pork Knuckle - RM82.68
Champagne Chicken - RM40.28
Beancurd - RM25.44
Vegetables - RM67.84
Soup - RM82.68

Total Bill - RM339.20 (for a group of 6, including drinks)
Avg Price per Pax (with drinks): RM56.53

MVX Summary

Score: 6.33/10

M – Meal Value
At more than RM50 per person for tai chow, the food quality did not justify the expense. It no longer offers the value it once did.
Score: 6.0/10

V – Venue & Vibes
Large, clean establishment occupying three shoplots. Parking is relatively easy as it is away from the main SS2 congestion. It remains comfortable for family gatherings.
Score: 6.0/10

X – X-Factor
The Champagne Chicken is unique and executed well. It is the only dish that still carries the legacy of this veteran restaurant.
Score: 7.0/10
