Hakka, Pork Belly
I returned to Sekmechoy Restaurant, one of the classic establishments in the Salak Selatan area known for its traditional Hakka fare. The restaurant itself has been around for decades, opening after the owner transitioned from the tin mining business.
I focused on the 梅菜扣肉 (Mui Choy Kau Yuk) or pork belly with pickled vegetables. This is braised pork belly with preserved mustard greens. The dish was fantastic. The key texture test in this dish is ensuring the pork belly doesn’t turn into soft mush, and Sekmechoy passed with flying colours. The pork belly still had some bite and was not overly soft—retaining its integrity while absorbing the rich, savoury sauce. The pairing with the Hokkien vegetable rice (芥菜饭) was perfect, as the lightly salted rice was a great counterpoint to the richness of the pork.

I also ordered the Drunken Chicken (黄酒鸡) and Vinegar Trotter (猪脚醋) for take-away. The Drunken Chicken was well-received by others, but the Vinegar Trotter was not sour enough for my personal liking. I prefer a more aggressive, sharp vinegar base.

Mui Choy Kau Yuk (Pork Belly w/ Veg) – RM26
Vege (Hokkien Vegetable Rice – RM4.00
Vinegar Trotter (Take Away) – RM19
Drunken Chicken (Take Away) – RM29
Total Bill with drinks – 88.60
Score: 8.3/10
M – Meal Value
RM26.00 for a quality Mui Choy Kau Yuk, and the overall price for the takeaway dishes is highly competitive for established Hakka cuisine. Excellent value for money.
Score: 8.8/10
V – Venue & Vibes
The atmosphere carries the weight of history, providing a genuine, old-school feel. It is air-conditioned and popular with locals. The proximity to the LRT station doesn’t hurt either.
Score: 8.0/10
X – X-Factor
The perfect texture of the Mui Choy Kau Yuk is a huge X-Factor. The restaurant clearly excels in its core Hakka braised and stewed dishes.
Score: 8.5/10
I had read some reviews saying that the service is poor and I have not experienced that the times I have been there. All times they were efficient and courteous.
