Japanese
I recently visited Tono Izakaya Changkat KL for lunch, a spot known for its contemporary take on the traditional Japanese izakaya concept. While the restaurant offers a polished environment, my experience with the food was a bit of a mixed bag.

Jen’s choice of the Chirashi Set was a success, as she found it quite appetizing. A particular highlight for her was the accompanying miso soup, which stood out for its quality and flavor.

The Miso Soup

On my end, however, the experience was less impressive. Neither the Salmon Hana Maki nor the Unagi Ura Maki hit the mark for me. It served as a reminder that for my personal palate, unagi is best enjoyed grilled on its own rather than tucked into a roll.
Salmon Hana Maki

Unagi Ura Maki

Chirashi Set: RM38.00
Salmon Hana Maki: RM28.00
Unagi Ura Maki: RM32.00
Total Bill: ~RM115.00 (Including 16% taxes)
About RM58 per pax
Score: 7.2 / 10
M – Meal Value
The pricing is ok, but the inconsistency in the maki rolls makes the value proposition a bit lower compared to other specialized Japanese spots in the city.
Score: 6.5/10
V – Venue & Vibes
The restaurant offers a modern and sleek izakaya vibe. It is a great place for a stylish lunch break.
Score: 8.0/10
X – X-Factor
The highlight remains the set lunches and the quality of the side components like the miso soup.
Score: 7.0/10
