Sambal Petai, Street Food
Breakfast at the Goh Desserts Puchong Jaya turned out to be a mixed affair. While the food itself is usually good, environmental factors played a significant role in the meal experience.
I ordered the Nasi Lemak and Jen had the Fried Vermicelli (Mee Hoon), but unfortunately, both were served too cold. This was primarily because the food tray was positioned directly under an air-conditioning unit blowing downwards, which rapidly chilled the pre-prepared portions.
The Kopi, which I have liked before, was a bright spot and remained good.
Thankfully, the meal was saved by a plate of Sambal Petai Minced Meat. Although this dish typically comes with rice, I requested it without since I already had the Nasi Lemak. Because it was stir-fried to order, it arrived hot, and Jen and I used its warmth to help heat up our other dishes. I particularly liked the spiciness of the sambal.
This temperature issue seems specific to the air-conditioned Puchong Jaya outlet; it is not a problem at the original house-based Tan Yew Lai location which relies on natural ventilation.
Kopi (Small) - RM2.80
Cham (Small) - RM2.80
Fried Yam Bean (Sengkuang) - RM1.80
Fried Maggi Mee - RM4.00
Fried Lemongrass Chicken - RM3.50
Sambal Petai Minced Meat Rice - RM13.00
Nasi Lemak - RM4.00
Thai Style Chicken - RM5.50
Grand Total - RM37.40
Average spend per pax still comes in under RM20 even with the extra dish
Score: 7.17/10
M – Meal Value
The pricing remains very affordable for a modern outlet, with basic mains starting as low as RM4.00. The Sambal Petai at RM13.00 is a bit of a premium add-on but delivered the necessary quality to anchor the meal.
Score: 7.5/10
V – Venue & Vibes
The air-conditioned environment provides comfort but, in this case, worked against the food quality. The layout needs better management to ensure the cooling system doesn't compromise the temperature of the pre-cooked items.
Score: 6.5/10
X – X-Factor
The flexibility of the kitchen to prepare hot stir-fried items like the Sambal Petai to order is the redeeming factor here.
