Nostalgic Return to Grandpa Bak Kut Teh Taman Paramount

Bak Kut Teh, Street Food

Description

Post by Chiefeater VK

It has probably been two decades since my last visit to Grandpa Bak Kut Teh Taman Paramount, so I was really glad to find that the BKT is still good. I have had better BKT since then but this one remains dependable. The premises remains the way it looked back then but the proof of why people come back is in the food.

The Claypot Bak Kut Teh hit the right notes. The pork was wonderfully tender, and the broth carried that classic, comforting herbal depth that defines a good BKT. In fact you can smell the broth as you step into the restaurant. Other than the meat, the intestines had a nice bite to it and were not powdery.

Tau Fu Pok

We also enjoyed the Braised Pork Leg, which was prepared well.

The nice surprise was the stir-fried “pau choy” (vegetable); it was genuinely excellent and a perfect accompaniment to the richer, meatier dishes.

My only grouse was that food came a bit slow. The meat arriving before the vegetables.
Nonetheless, it was a nostalgic meal that felt like catching up with an old friend.

MVX Summary

Score: 7.83/10

M – Meal Value
At roughly RM30 per head, the value is fair for a good BKT dinner.
Score: 8.0/10

V – Venue & Vibes
The restaurant maintains a classic, no-frills kopitiam vibe that feels frozen in time in the best possible way. It is a functional and nostalgic space that is perfectly suited for a relaxed family dinner where the focus is entirely on the food.
Score: 7.0/10

X – X-Factor
The X-factor is longevity and consistency. In the rapidly changing landscape of Petaling Jaya, finding a Bak Kut Teh spot that still serves the same soulful, herbal broth I remember from twenty years ago is commendable.
Score: 8.5/10
