Friendship Cafe Taro Porridge

Porridge, Street Food

Description

Post by Chiefeater VK

I’ve eaten fish porridge. Chicken porridge. Century egg porridge. Even frog porridge. But until today, I’d never come across a bowl of taro porridge. And that would have been the way the situation would have remained if Chiefeater Ashleye Yip had not introduced me to this stall at the Friendship Cafe in Bukit Jalil.

If you’re expecting the silky smooth Cantonese-style porridge that almost pours off the spoon, this isn’t it.

Instead, this porridge has a much thicker, stickier texture that reminds me more of a comforting bowl of home-cooked porridge. It has body, substance and a rustic character that makes it feel hearty from the very first spoonful.

Mixed throughout are neatly diced rectangular cubes of pork that provide a pleasant bite, while crispy fried shallots and fresh coriander add little bursts of fragrance. What I particularly enjoyed was the contrast in textures. The soft porridge, tender taro and little cubes of pork kept each spoonful interesting.

It’s not trying to be refined or delicate. Instead, it’s a comforting bowl that feels honest, satisfying and a little different from the porridge most of us are used to eating.

If you enjoy taro or are looking to try something outside the usual fish or century egg porridge, this is well worth ordering.
