Wantan Mee
After taking a walk around Austin Heights, we came upon Fortune Pot Austin Heights. I hadn’t planned on eating there, but discovering that wanton mee is what they are particularly known for made the decision easy.
Fortune Pot is actually a relatively young name compared with many of Johor’s old noodle institutions. Local food coverage from early 2019 described it as a newly opened wantan mee restaurant in Mount Austin. From the beginning, it distinguished itself by offering several versions of its noodles — the pale JB Signature, a darker Hokkien style, tomato and even tom yam — along with customisable char siew and other add-ons.
Since I was in JB, I had to go for the JB Signature Wantan Mee. The first thing you notice is how pale it is.

If you’re accustomed to wantan mee coated in dark soy sauce, this almost looks underseasoned before you’ve even taken a bite.
The colour belied the taste. I liked it.
Jen was more thrown off by its appearance, but for me there was enough savouriness coating the noodles to keep me going. All it needed was a little pepper to bring everything together.
In fact, the flavour and pale appearance reminded me more of Hakka Mee than the wantan mee I usually encounter.
I ordered mine large since Jen and I were sharing it, with the traditional char siew and fried small wantans added.
The char siew gave the bowl some richness while the fried wantans added crunch.

The actual wantans served in the soup, though, were kind of small. That was probably the weakest part for me.

We also had the Pickled Choi Sam. That turned out to be a nice appetiser. The pickled character gave it enough acidity to wake up the palate before going back to the noodles.

JB’s Signature Wantan Mee – RM12.90
Large – +RM1.00
Traditional Char Siew – +RM4.00
Fried Small Wantan – +RM3.00
Wantan Mee Total – RM20.90
Pickled Choi Sam – RM7.90
Subtotal – RM28.80
Service Charge (10%) – RM2.88
Rounding – RM0.02
Total: RM31.70
MVX Score: 7.8/10
M – Meal Value
RM20.90 for my customised large bowl isn’t kopitiam pricing, but it came with char siew and fried wantans and was satisfying enough. The RM7.90 pickled vegetable also made a pleasant accompaniment.
Score: 8.0/10
V – Venue
Fortune Pot takes wantan mee out of the traditional kopitiam environment and puts it into a comfortable air-conditioned restaurant setting in Austin Heights.
Score: 7.5/10
X – X-Factor
The pale JB Signature noodles are the interesting bit. They look almost underseasoned, yet there was considerably more flavour there than the colour suggested. A little pepper and I was happy.
