Char Kuey Teow, Street Food
The Penang Fried Kuey Teow from Big Family Restaurant SS15 was a pleasant surprise. Priced at RM10, it came as a generous serving.

The plate arrived glistening, with the scent of soy and wok hei wafting through the air. And they prepped the cockles the way I asked it, raw.

For a plate fried by a foreigner, this was a solid plate of CKT. The wok hei was unmistakable — smoky, slightly charred edges on the noodles, and enough spice to keep things interesting.

What it missed were those small but mighty touches — the banana leaf base and crispy lard bits — that could’ve pushed it from good to great. Still, it was satisfying and well worth the price for the portion size and flavour balance.
Score: 8.0/10
Big Family’s CKT earns Flavour (8.2) for its wok hei and freshness, Value (8.5) for portion size, and Experience (7.5) for consistency and speed. It’s a no-fuss, well-executed hawker classic that captures Penang essence in the heart of SS15 — minus the lard, but still full of flavour.
