Chiefeater Howard Chan had a lovely lunch at Long Yan Seafood Restaurant after an enjoyable ride to Port Dickson before heading home

Hamburg, Non-Halal
This hearty dish from Ground Eatery features a Japanese-style Hamburg steak — a thick, well-seared patty made from seasoned minced meat — served on top of a soft omelette and fluffy rice. The patty had a good bite to it: firm yet tender, well-seasoned, and juicy throughout. You could taste the umami from the sautéed onions within the meat blend, and the char on the outer layer brought a slight smokiness that balanced the richness.

The omelette underneath was delicately cooked, silky without being runny, and added a gentle layer of creaminess that paired well with the rice and meat. Sliced scallions sprinkled on top gave a pop of freshness and colour.

However, the sweet and sour demi-glace sauce ladled over the top leaned far too sweet for my liking — it overwhelmed the savoury notes of the beef and turned what could’ve been a very balanced dish into something cloying by the end.

The solution is simple: request for the sauce to be served separately, and you’ll get to enjoy the clean flavours of the Hamburg on its own terms.
A solid yoshoku-inspired meal, and with that small tweak, one I’d gladly return for.
