Hotpot
Dinner at Hong Jia Lao Guo in Taman Megah was a nostalgic experience. I must say I was swayed by Chiefeater Luke Soon’s previous review of this place. I chose hotpot because my daughter was craving something soupy, and this establishment is renowned for its traditional Teochew-style broths. The restaurant features a retro environment that complements its home-style cooking.

The centerpiece of our meal was the Teochew Taro Fish Soup set for 4 pax. This signature broth is milky, indulgent, and loaded with large slices of fresh grouper fish and plenty of taro and vegetables.

We also topped up our meal with several other items.
The standout additions were the prawn paste, served in a charming nostalgic tin, and the duck blood pudding.

The dinner concluded on a sweet note with a complimentary ais batang.

M – Meal Value
The pricing is higher than typical neighborhood hotpot stalls, reaching at RM60+ per person for our group. However, the use of premium grouper fish and the generous portion of ingredients in the Teochew Taro Fish Pot help justify the cost for a specialty meal.
Score: 7.0/10
V – Venue & Vibes
The restaurant successfully captures a sense of nostalgia with its decor and “old school” atmosphere. It is conveniently located just a short walk from Megah Rise Mall and not too far from the Taman Bahagia LRT, making it an accessible spot.
Score: 8.0/10
X – X-Factor
The broth is the definitive X-factor. Unlike typical China-style hotpots, this Malaysian-Chinese variant offers a unique, addictive depth from the fried taro and fresh fish that makes it a “smash hit” in the area.
