Prawn Mee, Street Food, Non-Halal
Tucked inside Keat Hoe Coffee Shop, Lean Huat Hockkean Mee (that’s their own take on how to spell the dish) seems to draw a regular crowd. From the number of orders coming out of the stall, it was clear this was a favourite among the locals. Curious, I decided to give it a try myself.

At RM6 a bowl, you can’t expect extravagance—but what you do get is a simple, honest bowl of Penang-style Hokkien Mee. The noodles had a nice firmness to them, holding their bite well without being soggy, which made for a pleasant texture throughout.

The broth, while not exceptional, was deep colored, clean-tasting and free from the overpowering effects that MSG-heavy soups often bring. It leaned more towards a savoury profile rather than the rich, prawn-heavy punch you sometimes get with higher-end versions.
As for the toppings, there were a few slices of meat, some dried prawns, shallots kept the bowl functional but minimal.
If you’re after a no-frills, wallet-friendly bowl of Hokkien Mee, Lean Huat does the job. It might not be a destination bowl, but it certainly explains why it’s a regular go-to for the coffee shop crowd.
Google Maps states that Lean Huat is permanently closed but as of April 2025, the news of their demise has been wrongly reported.
