I was invited to join a group of friends for dinner at Lao Ma Zi Tropicana. It used to be operate in Jalan Ipoh but relocated to the current location 5 or 6 years ago. Let me start by saying that getting here at night is an adventure by itself.
We were initially warned that this place can only be properly found via Google Maps and NOT Waze. I found the location on Grab so I thought I was good. The final stretch is along a dark un-tarred road, so you would not be remiss to think you have gone to the wrong place. The Grab driver stopped the car and wanted to turn back. I think he must have thought I was bringing him somewhere to kill him. When you come here at night, you won’t be able to see any signboard. Just look out for the Indian temple, it’s right next to it. I only found it because my friend came out to look for me.
This is a quaint restaurant found in a wooden house. Nevertheless, It is air-conditioned so you don’t have to worry. The main dining area has just 4 tables. It is that compact. They serve Hakka cuisine and take pride in doing it the home cooked way.
We ordered a total of 7 dishes to be shared by the 6 of us. A steamed tilapia, kampung chicken, braised smoked pork, tofu, egg and 2 types of vegetables. Every dish was more than competent. Well seasoned and flavourful. For me, the best dish of the night was the braised smoked pork. It was a good cut of meat but prepared so that it still had a bite to it. I don’t like meat that just crumbles. I know some people like melt in your mouth type meat. That’s not me.

The total bill was less than RM360 for the 6 of us. This included dessert and beers too. I think dinner at Lao Ma Zi Tropicana is a really good deal. Just overlook the scary road coming in.
