sunday lunch at a restaurant specializing in china food - nian wei china dumpling restaurant. this restaurant was opened in august 2022. i remember a week or so after it was opened, penang foodie posted about it and then i immediately decided to go. however when i went it was not opened. then several months after that, i went again, and noticed it was full house so did not want to eat there. yesterday after church service i decided to go and try my luck. it was opened and being early (just after 11.00 am) it was not crowded yet. there were 4 empty tables. as i was dining, the customers came in non-stop. until when i left, already full house.
the restaurant serves noodles, dumplings, fried buns and chinese sausage. only one staff runs around taking order and also calculating charges. they have a few foreign staff and the service was quick fast.
a man approached me on what i want to order. i notice they don’t have a menu. what i want i have to look up at the big signboard on the wall and pointed to what i want but even so i can’t read chinese and it was the man who simply suggested to me what i should order (recommended by him). he also suggested if i want dumpling and i think he mentioned they have 3 filling types. i took the pork filling as for the noodles, don’t know what noodles he let me have…. he just asked dry or soup.
well you can see from the pictures here, the noodle i had. not bad taste. the dumpling although good, but some i felt that the side ‘skin’ is too thick. seeing the next table to me had some kind of sausage stick, i decided to order one piece. i like this… tasted good though i think not so ‘fresh’ in that they already pre-prepared it a lot as when i asked for it, the man went to the kitchen counter, took one piece and dropped it at my dumpling plate…. all within one minute.
the grilled chinese sausage on a stick
it seems they only sell bottled herbal drinks e.g. chrysanthemum drink, loh han gor… and the whole bottle was bought to your table. no glass, no straw… so you have to drink right from the bottle. first time came across this concept.
when i asked the man to settle payment, he said “ok lah chin chai take you RM20 only” so i was not sure how much were the individual prices. i did asked him to list out individual but he mumbled so fast (he takes order fast too!) that i can’t catch, except catch that the noodles was RM8.00.
