Hokkien Mee, Street Food
The claim-to-fame for Restoran Paramount 86 is playing host to the legendary Ah Wah Fried Hokkien Mee kiosk – one of the best proponents of KL-style fried Hokkien noodles, called “mee” in local Hokkien parlance.
I remembered a time, perhaps 10-11 years ago, when a trip here for late-night supper was a treat. Sadly, times have changed – most of the local hawkers (who used to be Cantonese or Hakka) have retired, or else delegated all the cooking to foreign, mainly Myanmarese, workers. The food here all simply do not taste the way I remember them all to be.
But there’s a twist. The proprietors here, Ah Yee and Ah Ngau are a couple we’ve known since they’re kids.

They started their careers at PJ Baru, another iconic PJ taichow that we frequented for 3 decades
Thereafter breaking off; Ah Ngau one of the sous chefs, went over with his then new wife Ah Yee (who was the maitre’d at PJ Baru). Tonight, bcos of history and nostalgia, Ah Ngau helmed the woks again, and produced magic of old.

The Hokkien mee was on point at 7/10.

And the Cantonese Ying Yong was ok at 6.5/10

I recall in my 30s, Ah Yee would take my orders while I’m still in KL near Sultan Ismail, and by the time I pulled up at at PJ Baru the orders would be ready. Those suppers at the wee hours of the morning, seriously tasted the best.
These taichows are a heritage we must preserve.
