After being seeing Restaurant Ha Noi Pho closed many times, today I finally see it open! It turns out they've been closed for the past few months because the owner and chef's husband was back in Hanoi for surgery. I just chatted with the owner's wife and learned the reason, which made me feel relieved.
When I walked into the restaurant, the owner asked me in Chinese what I wanted. I said I was just grabbing her Vietnamese-style baguette (Banh Mi). She smiled and said, "That's not our signature dish, but you must try our authentic Hanoi flavor next time!" I quickly agreed.
Although not a signature dish, this Banh Mi still left me very satisfied. The crust was toasted to a crispy texture and had a nice crunch when you bit into it. The filling inside was simple—unlike the richly stuffed baguettes commonly found in Ho Chi Minh City, South Vietnam, Hanoi's Banh Mi emphasizes a balance of freshness and flavor. Today's filling includes freshly grilled lemongrass pork chop, Vietnamese sausage, pickled vegetables, and a special sauce. The overall flavor is refreshing and non-greasy, and every bite brings the flavors of Vietnamese street food.
I'll definitely dine in next time and try the owner's highly recommended Hanoi flavors!
