Kolo Mee, Street Food, Non-Halal
Jen had the red kolo mee at Restoran 126 Kopitiam in Sri Petaling, and I couldn't resist tasting a bit of it myself. The noodles were firm, with a delightful springiness that perfectly complemented the rich, flavorful sauce. Kolo mee, a beloved noodle dish from Sarawak, comes in various styles, typically distinguished by their color: the classic white, red, and black.
The white kolo mee is simply tossed in a light soy sauce mix, highlighting the natural taste of the noodles. The red version, which Jen ordered, is mixed with char siew sauce, giving it a slightly sweet and savory flavor. The black kolo mee, on the other hand, is flavored with dark soy sauce, offering a deeper, more robust taste.
The char siew served with the red kolo mee at 126 Kopitiam was the non-caramelized type, which Jen preferred. It was tender and flavorful, without the overly sweet glaze that some char siew variations have. At RM8 for a bowl, it was a reasonably priced and satisfying meal.
However, the kopi left much to be desired. It lacked the rich, aromatic punch that good kopi should have, which was a bit of a letdown. Despite this, the red kolo mee at Restoran 126 Kopitiam made the visit worthwhile, delivering a good balance of texture and taste.
