The last time I was here they’ve not renovated yet. I think at least 10 to 15 years. ChiefEaters William and Maya suggested nostalgia. And so we went. My memories of this place was 1) Singaporeans 2) charsiew
Chiefeater William suggested the ngan yue zhai fried rice as well. White bait fried rice. And so we had that. The usuals - steamed Soonhock (here it’s called bamboo fish vs marble goby) and a roast duck. Another recommendation by Chiefeater William. I’m happy to report that all dishes were good at 7/10 and above.
The char siew was still iconic for me. A little on the dry side - memories was the half fat skinny with glistening layers of fats and honey crusted top. Still 7/10 dropped from 7.5/10. Still a very good plate of char siew. It’s this dish that redefines char siew for me vs the Hong Kong roasts.
The duck was excellent - this was 7.5/10. Must have been an Irish duck. The fats were in all the right places. The favourites of the sauce was appealing.
The special fried rice was ok at 7/10. We actually got the order wrong the first time. We had to rectify and ordered another fired rice - the yangzhou.
This was the ngan yue zhai fried rice ChiefEater William insisted on. This was the real deal at. 7.25/10. The missing part (or rather the extra “, was the taro bits in the special fried rice).
The glass vermicelli prawns in claypot was also good 7/10
The tofu with braised beqn curd was good at 7/10
The soon hock was superior at 7.5/10 - beat fish of the night for me. Nothing beats a Malaysian steamed fish, maybe save HK true maestros.
The roast pork was good at 7/10
I got us sea cucumber and fish maw in brown sauce - one of my fav dishes. This was also good at 7/10
Overall pleasurable experience with the family at Overseas
The quality is consistent over the years. I’d put this slightly behind the Noble House - but then again that is at a slightly higher price ratio.
