The Chinese New Year is not over yet, and we decided to have a warm reunion dinner with our relatives on our last night in Kuching. The restaurant is located at See Good Food Centre, which has an excellent local reputation. It is a pork-free seafood Chinese restaurant that suits everyone's taste.
The proprietress enthusiastically recommended the store’s signature dish – curry fish head. We ordered half a Yo-Yo Ma fish head, which weighed nearly two kilograms. The fish meat was thick and the curry was fragrant. Every bite had a slightly spicy Southeast Asian flavor, which made people unable to stop eating.
My personal favorite, fried anchovies, is also on the menu. This is a dish that requires careful attention to both the timing and technique. Anchovies are small in size and need to be handled with care. They must be fried until they are golden and crispy, and even the bones can be chewed. Eat one at a time, and the full flavor of the seafood will burst in your mouth. It is so satisfying!
Of course, Sarawakians’ favorite wild vegetable is indispensable - biting wild vegetables, which are simply stir-fried with garlic, are green and refreshing, with a faint wild vegetable fragrance. Fried choy sum with eggs is one of the representative delicacies of East Malaysia. The tender choy sum paired with fried eggs is soft, smooth and tasty. I must eat it every time I go back to East Malaysia.
There is also a surprising dish called Crispy Shrimp with Salt and Crispy Paste. The store owner skillfully chops the shrimp meat, seasons it with salt and crispy pastry, and then fries it. It is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a salty and fragrant aroma.
We also had a plate of free-range chicken stir fried with soy sauce. The chicken is tender and juicy, and the sauce has a slightly sweet and burnt aroma, which whets your appetite.
The meal cost a total of RM650. Although the price is a bit high, the food ingredients are expensive during the Spring Festival. More importantly, being able to sit around a table with family, enjoy a sumptuous dinner, chat about family matters and share laughter is the most precious meaning of the Spring Festival. The food was delicious and the family love was even warmer. This night on the sixth day of the New Year became the warmest memory of the trip.
