Hakka, Non-Halal
SekMeChoy Restaurant has been ubiquitous in Salak South (deep core Hakka enclave) for more than 2 decades. The owner of the restaurant used to be in tin mining business but after the prices of tin crashed the owner remade himself as a restauranteur. Instead of selling the normal herbal Bak Kut Teh, he created a new recipe by replacing the herbs with pepper which is less heaty and a suitable substitution for his health condition. It’s not quite the Singapore pepper variant – but a unique blend on its own.

They also have several other Hakka signature dishes such as Ginger Duck, Braised Pork, Salted Chicken, Chinese Wine Chicken – I recommend their ginger wine egg as well, you won’t regret it. On rainy nights such as these- you will find their soup bases (pepper, ginger) nourishing, comforting even.
Ginger Wine Egg

Salted Chicken

There’s a train station just behind the restaurant – maybe less than 100 metres away.
All the dishes (2023) were solid 7s and above – and these were all firm Hakka favourites. Don’t recall an abacus yam seed offering but everything meat (chicken, pork) that Hakka families do well – they have it! If you had to select two dishes – I recommend their ginger rice wine (chicken, egg) and the pork trotters and/or mui choy kao yoke. Then follow it up with a claypot pepper BKT in the middle. And then 2-3 bowls of rice each.
Mui Choy Kao Yoke

Prices are reasonable , and they’ve friendly staff to boot.
Sekmechoy is a steal in a bustling metropolis – many Hakkas pay homage for a slice of home/heaven (and so should you).
