Nyonya Cuisine, Non-Halal
Amongst Penang's burgeoning Nyonya restaurant scene is the small, family-run Sifu Nyonya Cuisine on Rope Walk (Jln Pintal Tali), which has its own band of loyal customers.
We were there for lunch today, and affable owner, Peter Leong, was on-hand to recommend us the house specialties, all cooked by his 70-year-old aunt, Madam Beh Geok Wah.
Our lunch spread other than the Nasi Ulam included:
Stingray gulai tumis
Tau eu bak (soy-braised pork)
Asam prawns
Inchi kabin (fried spice-marinated chicken)
Jiu hu char (jicama with cuttlefish)
Lor bak (5-spiced meat rolls)
Pomelo kerabu salad (this was my favorite dish at lunch today)
Desserts (clockwise from top-left): gandum (bubur terigu), bee koh moi (pulot hitam), and bubur cha cha.
Head chef, 70-year-old Madam Beh Geok Wah, is the auntie of owner, Peter Leong. She has 50 years of cooking experience.
It's a small, unpretentious restaurant, with only 7 tables, so advance booking is essential, especially for dinner. I Whatsapped ahead yesterday to make a reservation for today's lunch.
