At Toppi in Hokkaido. Otaru is a seaside, fishing village that had the height of its herring boom in the early 21st century. You can’t possibly go wrong with Hokkaido ingredients - from their pork, to daily produce to wheat and vegetables and definitely their seafood. Hokkaido is still the seafood capital of Japan, and perhaps the world.
We’ve had Omakase at Otaru - every season, revellers spill out of the slopes in search for the freshest seafood. This time around, we went native / local - opting for places that had less than 1% of overseas visitors. Places where they don’t have an English menu. Toppi is one such place. Lucky us, we had a local with us.
Winter season , crab (kani) in all its forms is a must - the hotpot / soup is my fav way to enjoy this delicacy. The oysters, scallops and prawns of Hokkaido are equally enticing. I swear it tastes like it’s sugar laden. Natural sweetness. And all this off from the conveyer belt!
Total for 4pax was less than SGD150. I’m not sure what to say - except that while our eyes were still hungry, the tummy was about to burst.
