Tang Jai Yoo Restaurant Teochew Dinner
Teochew
Chiefeater Patrick Sato Lee had a simple Teochew style dinner at Tang Jai Yoo Restaurant in Bangkok's Chinatown

Japanese, Skewers
Choosing from the à la carte menu at Toriya Yakitori in Puchong offered a refreshing shift from their familiar yakitori sets. This authentic Japanese establishment is noted for its focus on quality, led by a Chef Mark with over 35 years of experience handling skewers.
The meats were excellent as usual but that’s only to be expected.

The camembert, elegantly drizzled with honey, was another standout that tasted every bit as good as its presentation suggested.

The vegetable skewers were particular highlights of the evening. I never knew that lotus root could taste so good grilled.

The zucchini was expertly grilled to a flavour that remarkably mimicked meat. This blew my mind on how this was possible.

To accompany these savoury bites, a selection of sake proved to be an ideal pairing, enhancing the traditional izakaya experience.
The meal concluded on a bright, seasonal note with a mandarin sorbet. Given the abundance of mandarin oranges during the approach of Chinese New Year, this refreshing dessert served as a perfect palate cleanser to wrap up the dinner.

M – Meal Value
The à la carte approach allows for a more tailored experience, though it can be pricier than the sets. However, the technical skill involved in dishes like the meat-like zucchini and the high quality of the imported sake justify the premium.
Score: 8.0/10
V – Venue & Vibes
The restaurant offers a warm and minimalist ambiance that reflects traditional Japanese aesthetics. It is a cozy and inviting space, ideal for a special outing in the Puchong area.
Score: 8.0/10
X – X-Factor
The standout feature is the chef’s mastery over simple ingredients. Transforming a humble zucchini into a meat-like delicacy and offering seasonal treats like the mandarin sorbet demonstrates a level of culinary thoughtfulness that keeps the experience engaging.
