Steak, Grilled Meat, Pork-Free
It was time for a late Sunday lunch and my little group was expecting a quiet spot for food and chatting. We were a hungry lot too, so to satisfy our carnivorous natures, we decided to give Uncle Botak BBQ a try. I had been there for lunch before (it was packed full of diners) and I found the lunch sets to be hearty, quick and delicious.
This time, we had the whole place to ourselves. Apparently, a large group had just finished their Sunday lunch a few minutes before. The lunch sets aren’t available on weekends so we opted for the BBQ 4-person platter (RM118++). It’s a sizeable order that had 200 g of meat each of chicken, beef, lamb and a big helping of meatballs. A garden salad bowl and roasted potato wedges were also included. There were four different sauces to go with the meat.
Chicken:
Tender, well-seasoned with hints of rosemary, goes well with a creamy sauce.
Beef:
Medium with a pink tinge, tender, strong beefy flavors. It was great by itself or with a very spicy sauce (a personal recommendation by owner Daniel). I did my own Korean-style wrap with lettuce and shredded cabbage from the platter.
Lamb:
My favorite meat of the bunch, it was tender and cooked medium-well. It had hints of rosemary again and I preferred it by itself. The Thai mint sauce added sweet and sour notes.
Meatballs:
Chunky but a bit dry, worked better when slathered in a brown sauce or with the special spicy sauce. That reminded me of the cranberry sauce on Ikea meatballs but with a dash of chilli heat.

Smoked duck:
This was an extra order (RM29++ for 200 g). I found this to be the real star of the meal: it had a strong, smoky flavor from fat that slowly melted in the mouth, and a sparkle of heat from a dusting of chilli flakes on the meat. If you’re a fan of bold flavors, then the ducky-ness of the dish really stands out.
Surprisingly, a sparkling asam boi soda was a good drink to go with the platter. I think it was down to the sourness and bubbles cutting down on all that fat and meat. I didn’t have room for dessert but maybe next time…
Uncle Botak BBQ also handles events and advance orders for grilled and smoked meats.
