Dinner with family at Restoran Tai Ka Lok PJ New Town.
We had the following items.
1. Salted Chilli prawn - 7.5
2. Intestines (chilli and har mai) - 7
3. Salt Baked Crab - 7.5
4. Fried Fish (Garoupa) - 7
5. Claypot Kangkung - 6.5
6. Steamed Egg - 7
7. Tofu Minced Pork - 6.5
8. Salt Pepper Chilli Squid (no picture as we consumed before I could take a picture) - 6.5
Overall - 7/10
Most would choose mantis prawns done this way. But I wanted to try this for my own at home, so chose the sea (vanamei) prawns instead. Side track - I feel tiger prawns are a little too sinewy for me. The best for gambas would be the Mediterranean variants. Just like for Chinese cooking the vanamei or silver/white looking prawns are best - just IMHO
Now the lowlights. The claypot kangkong didn’t have the full belachan punch to it. The picture on the menu had pork lard (which got me), but the dish came out without. I saw my siblings knew the owners them being regulars, so we let it slide.
The fried fish was a little too salty for me, but perfectly fried nonetheless. The quality of the soya sauce drizzle matters! I think this was just laced on without a pre-fry of the soya sauce blend. Details like this detract 0.5 to 1 point!
Don’t get me wrong, all dishes were 6.5 and above. the standout dishes brought the average up to a solid 7.
In the spirit of consistency over intensity, I think this place will go far and definitely lives up to the neighbour tai chow moniker for us.
Total bill for 7 pax - RM700
