Chiefeater Kane Chong had several dishes at Restoran Mei Yuan for RM180

Cantonese, Non-Halal
Dinner at Yilo Puchong turned out to be a mixed experience, with some hits and some misses. Jen ordered their Ying Yong (RM18), a Cantonese-style noodle dish. The taste was commendable, with the wok hei and flavour of the stir-fried noodles coming through nicely. However, the gravy was a bit too watery for Jen’s preference, which reduced her rating of it.

We also ordered a steamed pork patty with salted fish (RM23), a classic dish known for its rustic charm and intense savoury flavour. However, what arrived at the table was a braised pork belly with salted fish instead. When we asked the waiter about the mix-up, he confidently insisted it was a steamed pork patty. Sometimes that’s the problem with foreign wait staff.

Though the dish wasn’t what I expected, I decided not to argue, especially since the aroma was inviting. Thankfully, the flavour didn’t disappoint. It had that salty, umami punch you want from salted fish, and the pork belly itself was tender and succulent. Despite the confusion, I found myself enjoying the dish.

The real star of the meal, however, was the Yuet Kong Hor (RM20). This dish features hor fun (rice noodles) cooked with a rich, soy-based sauce and served with slices of tender beef. The hor fun was smooth and velvety, with just the right amount of chew, and the beef had a nice bite and was well-seasoned. The dish had a decent aroma and it didn’t disappoint in flavour. This was easily the highlight of the evening. It’s amazing that a bar gets the wok-he right for this street food favourite.

I rounded off the dinner with a mug of Guinness, which was priced at RM21. It added a bitter yet satisfying finish to the meal, balancing out the richer flavours of the food.
