Siong Tong Gai Puchong has always caught my eye with its steady crowd, so we finally stopped by for dinner. We decided to go all out and ordered their signature steam three-treasure sea bass, which, surprisingly, included a healthy portion of clams, along with sweet and sour pork, tofu topped with minced meat, and stir-fried lettuce.
The sea bass truly stood out. Steamed sea bass has a naturally sweet, delicate flavour, and this one delivered perfectly. It was steeped in a rich, savoury broth that almost demanded to be enjoyed with rice. The fish had a flaky texture with a mild taste that lets the flavours of the broth shine through without overpowering it. I loved how the fish absorbed the depth of the broth while staying light and flavourful. I don't often order fish but I enjoyed this one immensely.
The rest of the dishes added nicely to the meal. The sweet and sour pork had a satisfying balance of tangy and sweet notes.
The tofu with minced meat was a simple but well-executed comfort dish.
Even the stir-fried lettuce, fresh and lightly seasoned, complemented the other flavours well.
Siong Tong Gai’s reputation for packing in the crowds seems well-deserved – each dish was enjoyable, with the sea bass as the evening’s highlight. Total bill for 5 pax came up to RM277.
