Chiefeater Paula Tan had the big breakfast at Nutmeg in Bangsar Village as her one meal of the day
Japanese, Pork-Free
Having recently read about Otoba, I was intrigued to try the food there. When the opportunity came with our regular technopreneur dinner gathering, this spot at The Five seemed like the perfect venue.
The transformation of The Five from old office spaces into a buzzing lifestyle hub is truly impressive. Otoba’s warm ambiance, subtle lighting, and contemporary design blend traditional Japanese izakaya vibes with a modern twist. Otoba serves pork-free izakaya fare like yakitori and kushiyaki paired with a sake selection.
There was a slight hiccup with our reservation made through their FB page as it was not registered in their system. So use the WhatsApp link below. Nonetheless they sorted that out in a jiffy.
We indulged in a bottle of sake (RM228), which was a good companion to the variety of dishes we sampled. A nice touch is that you have a selection of cups to choose from to drink your sake with.
The items we had.
Tsukune (chicken meatball)
Mune (chicken breast)
Okra
Unagi
Grilled Squid
Hanger Steak
Lamb Bao
Nasu Don
Corb Ribs
Spicy Karaage
Among the spread, two standouts stole the spotlight: the prawn gyoza and the lamb yakitori.
The prawn gyoza was a masterclass in texture and flavour. The dumpling skin had the perfect chew, encasing a juicy, well-seasoned prawn filling. Paired with a delicate dipping sauce, it was a crowd-pleaser.
The lamb yakitori was another highlight. Each skewer boasted tender, flavourful lamb, perfectly charred and seasoned. The meat had a subtle smokiness that paired exceptionally well with the sake, making it a memorable dish for the table.
The other standout was their service which was excellent throughout even when the night got busy.
The total bill at Otoba came up to RM695 for five diners, including the sake. While it’s on the pricier side, the quality of the food, combined with the relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere, made it a worthwhile indulgence.
