Tong Po Yuk, Non-Halal
I had been craving Tung Po Yuk for a while, so when I saw it on the menu of Esquire Kitchen IOI Mall, I decided to have it delivered. While it arrived slightly cold, a quick reheat in the oven brought it back to life.
The flavour leaned towards the savoury side, which I quite enjoyed. The meat had come apart slightly, but it still had a good bite, rather than being overly soft. This is where it differs from the gold standard of Tung Po Pork—traditionally, a well-executed version would have a deep, rich, and glossy braising sauce with a perfect balance of savoury, sweet, and umami notes, often enhanced by Shaoxing wine. The pork should be silky and gelatinous, with the fat layers melting effortlessly into the sauce, creating an almost custard-like texture.
While this version didn’t quite reach that level of melt-in-the-mouth decadence (actually I would not have liked it if it was melt-in-the-mouth), it was a solid and enjoyable dish FOR ME. Given that it came via delivery, RM49.80 felt reasonable for the portion and flavour. Would I order it again? Yes, especially when the craving strikes.
