Dim Sum
I headed to Ying Jia Restaurant in Taman Bukit Indah, knowing full well what I was getting into. This is not the place for the discerning “dim sum”melier who expects Michelin-star quality; this is a community establishment for the locals to yum cha.
The setting is typical neighbourhood fare: open-air, non-air conditioned, with the constant buzz of patrons filling the space. We ordered a selection of their most popular items: Har Gao (prawn dumplings), Siew Mai, a prawn Cheong Fun, char siew bao and the baked items like the mango tarts and jin deui (sesame balls).
The Har Gao was decent tasting though the skin was too thick for my liking. The prawn filling had a mild springiness.

The Siew Mai was hearty, topped with orange roe, offering a substantial, meaty bite. This is a mass-appeal type of dim sum—solid, reliable, and meant to fill the stomach, not challenge the chef.

Prawn Cheong Fun

Char Siew Bao

The other dim sum were alright too.

If you are here for an unpretentious, straightforward, neighbourhood dim sum experience, then this is ok. It’s a place for tradition and catching up with friends.
Har Gao – RM7.00
Siew Mai – RM6.50
Cheong Fun – RM6.50
Egg Tart – RM5.00
Total Bill – RM51.10 for 10 items including drinks for 2 pax
Score: 7/10
M – Meal Value
With most dishes priced between RM6.20 and RM7.00, it’s reasonably priced for the quantity and the decent quality provided. Good bang for your buck for a family outing.
Score: 7.5/10
V – Venue & Vibes
Community meeting spot for yum cha. Lacks air-conditioning but is comfortable and conducive to conversation.
Score: 6.5/10
X – X-Factor
A place that serves its community well. It excels in being dependable, everyday dim sum, not fine dining.
Score: 7.0/10
