Dinner at Kedai Kopi Puchong

Tai Chow

Description

Post by Chiefeater VK

Kedai Kopi Puchong was where we ended up for dinner because they had a decent crowd at their outlet when we drove past.

Their menu

The stir-fried Yau Mak was absolutely outstanding—vibrantly green, perfectly crisp, and imbued with a clean, fragrant wok hei that elevated the simple vegetable plate.

The fried rice was equally lovely, boasting well-separated grains that were remarkably light, fluffy, and completely free of the heavy, greasy oil slick that often plagues neighborhood variants.

However, the specialized protein and gravy plates took a sharp downturn. The Guinness pork ribs was a disappointment, turning out far too tough to enjoy comfortably.

But the ultimate letdown of the evening belonged to the mapo tofu. Instead of delivering the assertive, sharp, and numbing savory-spiced profile that defines this classic Sichuan comfort dish, the gravy was bafflingly sweet. Packing a sugary profile instead of proper savory depth, it left us questioning why a kitchen with such solid wok fundamentals would take such an unwelcome detour.

MVX Summary

MVX Score: 6.4/10

M – Meal Value
At RM65 net for a multi-dish dinner covering pork, tofu, greens, and rice, the basic financial entry point is reasonable. However, when two out of the four dishes miss their structural and flavor benchmarks, the true culinary utility takes a visible hit.
Score: 6.5/10

V – Venue & Vibes
The venue captures the essential, unpretentious charm of a bustling suburban corner coffeeshop. It is airy, functional, and deeply embedded in the local neighborhood fabric, making it fine for a quick, casual fuel stop, though not suited for a long, relaxed evening.
Score: 6.0/10

X – X-Factor
The X-factor is the exceptional grease control on the wok items. Delivering fried rice that remains perfectly dry and fluffy alongside expertly snappig greens gives them a distinct technical edge, making it a shame the gravy profiles didn’t match the same standard.
Score: 6.8/10
