Izakaya Unatoto Bến Thành Nishin Kazunoko
Japanese
Izakaya Unatoto Bến Thành is known for unagi, but it was the Nishin Kazunoko, cold soba and sour plum Sapporo that we enjoyed most

Wantan
We stopped at Hủ Tiếu Hồng Phát Bến Thành for a snack and ordered a bowl of wantan.

The flavour of the wantan immediately reminded me of one I used to have in Penang. There was something familiar about the seasoning of the filling that made it very easy for me to like.

What stood out, though, was the skin. It was considerably thicker than the type of wantan I am used to in Malaysia. At first I thought it was simply this batch, but we later noticed that this thicker wrapper seems to be part of the style here.

That changes the eating experience quite a bit. Instead of a delicate wrapper that almost disappears around the filling, this one gives you noticeably more chew.

I still enjoyed the wantan because the filling itself tasted good, but I would have preferred a thinner skin.
Hồng Phát has been serving hủ tiếu in Saigon for more than 50 years, and the Bến Thành branch carries its Nam Vang noodle tradition into the city centre. The original District 3 branch has also been recognised by Michelin with a Bib Gourmand
Wantan – VND95,000
Total: VND95,000
MVX Score: 7.7/10
M – Meal Value
VND95,000 is not especially cheap for a bowl of wantan, but the filling had enough flavour and character to make the snack enjoyable.
Score: 7.5/10
V – Venue
The Bến Thành outlet is a proper restaurant rather than a basic noodle stall, making it comfortable for a quick meal or snack in central Ho Chi Minh City.
Score: 7.5/10
X – X-Factor
The filling was what stayed with me. It had a flavour that unexpectedly reminded me of the wantan I used to eat in Penang, even if the much thicker wrapper was not quite my preference.
Score: 8.0/10
