Big Breakfast, Coffee, Pastries, Pork-Free
With news of new eateries sprouting up in the Tiong Nam area, curiosity led to a morning exploration that ended at House of Wheat Chow Kit—a café one wouldn’t typically expect in an old residential neighbourhood. Tucked within a row of terraced houses, two units have been transformed into a sleek, modern café dedicated to sourdough and coffee delights.

The Big Breakfast (RM38++) arrived beautifully plated, but while the components were decent, the scrambled eggs fell short due to a lack of seasoning. The sourdough, cut into thick slices, offered a satisfyingly chewy texture—though this might not be to everyone’s taste. While enjoyable, it felt like it was missing something—a simple side of butter would have completed the experience.

But the true highlight? The Maritozzo. A Maritozzo is a classic Italian pastry originating from Rome, consisting of a soft, slightly sweet brioche bun generously filled with whipped cream. Traditionally enjoyed as a breakfast treat, it has a lightness that makes it indulgent yet not overwhelming.

Here, House of Wheat’s version was a dream — the cream was perfectly balanced, neither overly sweet nor too rich, allowing the pastry itself to shine. Paired with a well-brewed coffee, it made for a sublime morning treat.

As part of their AM set (RM15++), which includes a choice of pastry and coffee, this was easily the standout order. While the café has some room for improvement on the savoury end, their pastries and coffee are certainly worth a visit.
