Japanese
Lunch at Hungry Don in SS15 turned out to be an affordable affair, which already gave the meal a head start. For a casual Japanese-style lunch in Subang Jaya, the prices felt approachable, and that always helps when expectations are kept sensible.

I had the garlic fried rice with chicken karaage. The chicken karaage was actually quite tasty, with a good crisp exterior and enough flavour to make it enjoyable. It was the better part of the dish and the item that gave the plate some appeal. The fried rice, on the other hand, lacked a bit of seasoning. It was not bad, but it could have used a little more punch to make the whole plate come together better.

Jen’s kimchi yaki udon was decent too. It looked generous enough, with thick udon strands, a light kimchi-style broth or sauce base, and a mix of ingredients that made it feel like a complete bowl. It may not have been especially memorable, but it sounded satisfying enough for the price point.

What helped the overall experience was that nothing felt overpriced. At under RM40 for two mains after service charge and rounding, it was easy enough to accept a few shortcomings. This is not the sort of place where you expect perfection. You come in hoping for a decent, affordable lunch, and on that front Hungry Don more or less delivered.
The miso soup and side dish additions also made the meal feel a little fuller without pushing the bill up too much. That matters, especially for students and workers around SS15 who want something filling without spending too heavily.
Overall, this was a reasonably satisfying lunch stop if value is part of the equation. The chicken karaage was the standout, the fried rice could have used more seasoning, and Jen’s udon was decent enough.

At RM39.20 for two mains, this was a very fair lunch in SS15. The chicken karaage gave good value, and even though the fried rice lacked a bit of seasoning, the overall pricing made it easier to accept.

V – Venue & Vibes
Hungry Don feels like a practical, casual lunch spot rather than somewhere built around atmosphere. The appeal here is affordability and convenience, especially for a quick weekday meal in SS15.
Score: 7.0/10
X – X-Factor
The X-factor was the chicken karaage, which turned out better than the fried rice it sat on and gave the meal its strongest point.
