Locanda Brunch
Italian
Chiefeater Luke Soon rates Locanda as one of his favourite Italian restaurants in Singapore

Chinese, Non-Halal
It was an eventful Sunday night. First, I drove my colleagues from abroad to the New Kai Seng Seafood Restaurant in the Pudu area for a seafood dinner. I was contemplating going to the more upscale Siong Tong Gai but I thought this one was more down to earth in its settings. They serve the same concept of “steaming” fish and other seafood in a stainless steel pot filled with superior soup. From the menu I chose the following dishes
1. Steamed Fish with Clams
I couldn’t make out what dish it was as I did not understand what the uncle said when he recommended the fish. It was not a whole fish but cuts of a fish that has a thick layer of Omega 3 fats. Needless to say this was one of the best dishes we had. The clams were great and the fish was sweet. That layer of fats was not too fishy in taste. The superior soup was totally my fave with its taste rich in rice wine and ginger flavour. But one of my colleagues does not like spicy food so he didn’t like the ginger tasting soup. I didn’t ask him before I ordered the dishes.

2. Stir Fried Green Dragon Vegetables
I didn’t like it as the taste was pretty flat and it came in a small plate so there wasn’t enough fiber to go around the table.

3. Deep Fried Salted Egg Mantis Prawns
Another great tasting dish. The mantis prawns were already sweet tasting but encapsulating it within a layer of crusty salted egg made it even more delicious.

4. Smoked Salted Chicken
This is also a good one. It has the right amount of smokey flavour and is not too salty. The chicken is full of that village chicken flavour. A good pairing with plain white rice. Oh and that drumstick was huge and muscular.

5. 2 Flavors Pork Ribs
This was the dud of the night. Dry and flat tasting ribs. The one that was deep fried with prawn paste was dry and tasteless save for that hint of prawn paste. The other one was bathed in what looked like mayonnaise but tasted nothing like it. It was just one dimensionally sweet.
