Pork Dishes, Non-Halal
Our first meal in Kota Kinabalu led us to VOGS Authentic Sinalau Bakas, a spot renowned for its traditional Sabahan porky delicacies. Sinalau Bakas, which translates to "smoked wild boar," is a beloved dish in Sabah, known for its rich, smoky flavor and tender meat. The smoking process imparts a unique taste that is cherished by locals and visitors alike. However, we found out later that they don't serve wild boar meat anymore as the Sabah government has prohibited the hunting of it. So the pork used here would be farmed pork.

We started with a pork platter (called the VOGS Platter), featuring a mix of sinalau, pork sausage, satay, stewed pork, and curry pork. Each item on the platter was bursting with flavour.

The satay, in particular, stood out for its tenderness and moistness. Another thing to note was that the skewers were not oily to handle. Too many places have oily sticks making it an off-putting experience. Not the case here.

The sinalau bakas was rich and savoury. Do note this is smoked pork and not roast pork. So don't expect the skin to be crackling.

However, the curry pork was my favourite (bottom left item). The meat had just the right consistency, and the curry itself was aromatic and well-balanced, not overly spicy but still deeply flavourful. The blend of spices and tender pork created a comforting and satisfying dish.

To complete our meal at VOGS Authentic Sinalau Bakas, we shared a pork burger. While the burger was juicy and flavourful, the patty's texture was a bit too soft for my preference. I would have liked the meat to be more compact, providing a firmer bite. Nevertheless, the addition of gherkins was a pleasant surprise, adding a tangy contrast that enhanced the overall taste.
