Chee Cheong Fun, Non-Halal
Wen Cheong Rong Hainan Cafe is a nondescript cafe located on the side Aurora Place Bukit Jalil that faces the Parkson entrance of Pavilion Bukit Jalil. While it bills itself as Hainan cafe, it serves up a Penang-style chee cheong fun that’s respectable, if not quite the perfect hit I might hope for.

The CCF itself had a soft, silky texture, generously doused in a thick sweet shrimp paste sauce, but just fell short in terms of depth. A heavier hand with the portion of prawn paste would have given it that true Penang punch.

Thankfully, the house-made chili sauce (which is not something I recall finding in Penang when it comes to CCF) came to the rescue. Sharp, fiery, and unapologetically bold, it provided the kind of kick that lingered on the tongue. For RM6.90, it was a worthwhile bite.

The white coffee, however, didn’t quite measure up. RM7.50 got us a larger-than-usual cup, but the flavour was flat. It lacked the roasted aroma or creamy finish one expects from a good cup of white coffee. The irony that the drink cost more than the food wasn’t lost on us.
