Koay Teow Th’ng, Chee Cheong Fun, Pork-Free
To many Penang Island natives, the name Pulau Tikus immediately conjures memories of busy mornings spent at the wet market either doing "marketing" or enjoying the street food delights in that area. So I was curious to check out Pulau Tikus Market Megah Rise Mall, hoping to find some of the market favourites in air conditioned comfort.
When they first opened, there were long queues. While there were no queues on our visit, the place was busy despite being early in the day. It's clear that many are as nostalgic for Pulau Tikus hawker fare as I am.
I had the Koay Teow Th'ng (RM16.80), since it is the fist thing that you see when you past the shop. That's their recommended dish. I found the dish lacking seasoning and flavour. I expected a strong hearty broth but what I got was a rather bland one. HOWEVER, all the ingredients they used in this dish was excellent. The koay teow was very smooth, The variety of fish balls that were in the bowl were delightfully tasty and springy.
Next up was the Yam Cake (RM5.20). While tasting decently of yam, the cake had an almost hard texture that some may find chewy. The Chee Cheong Fun (RM8.80) looked good but I felt it could have benefited from a bolder prawn paste flavour.
Chee Cheong Fun
But there was one thing I thoroughly enjoyed - their Kopi (RM4.20). The brew was aromatic and had a good blend of caffeine with condensed milk that complemented each other. And the best part was that it came with rusks for dipping! It transported me straight back to mornings spent at the wet market hawker stalls.
With some fine-tuning, they could truly capture the flavours Penang food lovers remember so fondly. I'll be back to check on their progress.
