After many years Chiefeater VK revisited the Nasi Lemak at Restoran Tan Yew Lai Nasi Lemak Corner

Nyonya Cuisine, Yam Cake, Pork-Free
Returning to Rasadulu Cafe, I was eager to indulge in their cendol once again. This time, their Yam Cake caught my attention as well. Yam cake, also known as “Or Kuih” in Hokkien or “Wu Tao Gou” in Cantonese, is a traditional Chinese dish that is made from a base of taro (yam) and rice flour. The process begins with the preparation of the taro, which is peeled, cubed, and then steamed until soft and tender. Once cooked, the taro is mashed into a smooth paste, giving the yam cake its distinctive texture.

Next comes the rice flour, which is mixed with water to form a thick batter. This batter is then combined with the mashed taro, along with other ingredients such as dried shrimp, mushrooms, and shallots. These additional ingredients add depth of flavour and complexity to the dish, creating a harmonious blend of savoury and umami notes.
The mixture is then poured into a greased pan and steamed until set, resulting in a firm yet delicate cake that is bursting with flavour. Once cooked, the yam cake is left to cool before being sliced into individual portions and served with a variety of condiments such as chili sauce, soy sauce, and fried shallots.
Taking my first bite, I was immediately struck by the perfect balance of flavour. The creamy texture of the taro melding seamlessly with the savoury notes of the fried shallots intermingled with the yam. The seasoning was spot on, with just the right amount of saltiness and spice to tantalise the taste buds without overwhelming the palate.

At RM8.50 per serving, this is another affordable gem at Rasadulu Cafe.
