Strolling along Salamanca Market
Street Food
Chiefeater Eddie Low and his travel buddy strolled along Salamanca Market on Saturday to savour the delights on offer
Stewed Fish Head, Non-Halal
It is a good time to walkover and plant yourself on a table at Kedai Kopi Hock Seng Hin and wait to enjoy before the lunch crowd. As a newbie fresh off the bus working right in the heart of KL in the mid 80s, my KL born colleagues took great delight in showing me all the bright & shimmering lights in this City. Never mind that I will be flat broke by mid month. And of course it did not deter them from driving all over to their fav lunch lobang. Hock Seng Hin was our once a week affair and connived to arrive on the dot at noon.
The strongest woman alive, Ah Cheh will be carrying two big wooden flip tables on both hands to throw at the five food corridors for the growing crowd. Ah Cheh has aged very well and looks as strong as ever! She laughed which is rare when I told her so.
We feasted on "Hoong Siew Yue Tau" and Stewed Fishhead with Spicy Black Bean Sauce.
Spicy Black Bean Sauce with Chili Padi
Best to soak your rice in the gravvy
On returning after many years working in PJ, Ah Cheh told me they had scaled down due to age. My fav "Hoong Siew Yue Tau" is no more. only Stewed Fishhead. Still it is a nostalgic experience coming back for a meal now & then BUT this time I bring cold beers aka elixir of life from next door.
Note:
Exit at Pudu LRT, walk to Sek Yuen, turn left and walk 10 mins to reach Hock Seng Hin.
Not for squeamish people who prefer modern fine dining and will be horrified with the occasional appearance of Remy of Ratatouille fame.
Kitchen conditions are a throwback to bygone years of wood & charcoal fired stoves.
